The Null Input Problem: A Nine-Dimension Audit of Nothing

CryptoAlpha

A research pipeline handed me a nine-dimension analysis framework last week. Every table rendered. Every risk cell was populated — with N/A. The Howey test had four rows, four verdicts of "not assessed," and a bolded composite judgment that read N/A. The glossary at the bottom defined priced-in, Ponzi flywheel, FDV-to-revenue. It was, structurally, a flawless document. It was also about nothing.

The upstream parser had returned an empty shell. No title. No source. No information points. No project identifier. What arrived was a schema with no payload, plus an explicit statement that executable analysis depth was zero — because any specific judgment built on that input would be fabrication rather than research.

The Null Input Problem: A Nine-Dimension Audit of Nothing

I have read several thousand crypto research reports. Almost none of them contain that sentence. That is the anomaly worth tracing.

Crypto research has a half-life problem. A conclusion drawn from a protocol announcement is often stale inside thirty days. A conclusion drawn from an unlock schedule, inside a week. That compresses the pipeline. Analysts are not paid to be slow; they are paid to be early, and early is structurally adjacent to wrong.

Into that gap walked automated research stacks. By 2026 most mid-tier funds and several audit shops run some variant of a retrieve-then-synthesize pipeline: scrape the announcement, embed it, ask a model to fill a fixed analytical template, ship the output under a human byline. The template is the product. Nine dimensions, forty cells, a risk matrix, a confidence rating. It reads as diligence because diligence reads like that. The economics are simple: a human analyst who writes "insufficient input" is billing for a non-answer; an automated one that writes the same thing is filing a bug report.

The Null Input Problem: A Nine-Dimension Audit of Nothing

The failure mode is not that these systems invent facts. It is subtler. When the retrieval layer returns nothing, the generation layer still has a template to fill — and a template with blank cells reads as broken, while a template with N/A in every cell reads as rigorous. The system optimizes for the second appearance.

This pipeline did the opposite. It stopped, produced a diagnostic instead of a verdict, and appended a minimum viable input set: three of five fields — project name, one-sentence claim, information points, source plus timestamp, token or funding status — and analysis resumes.

That is not a refusal. That is an interface contract.

Read the diagnostic as code and the structure becomes obvious. It is a function that reverts instead of returning a default.

Solidity developers know the pattern. A getter that returns 0 on a missing value is indistinguishable from a getter that returns a genuine zero balance. The compiler does not warn. The caller does not check. Six months later someone prices a collateral position off that zero and the position liquidates. The bug is never the missing data. The bug is the missing require().

The report is a require() statement wearing a document's clothing. Each of its nine dimensions carries the same three fields: the assessment, the basis, and the minimum input required to unblock it. Basis is the load-bearing one. Every conclusion in the document points at an empty list and says so out loud. Every field is a question the system asked itself and could not answer. That is what an audit looks like before it has evidence, and it is a shape this industry has almost entirely lost the ability to produce.

Compare the standard artifact. A typical project review lists "Security: audited by [firm]" and moves on. It does not list the basis. It does not say the basis is a marketing page naming a firm, and I have not verified the engagement letter exists. Claim and basis are collapsed into a single string, and the string is what gets forwarded.

The Null Input Problem: A Nine-Dimension Audit of Nothing

Confidence annotation is a checksum, and most crypto research ships without one. Not the numeric kind — the structural kind, where each assertion carries a pointer to the evidence that produced it and the pointer resolves. When I audited an AI-agent trading protocol in 2026, the vulnerability was not in the model weights. It was in the oracle adapter. The agent consumed a price feed and a confidence score as independent inputs, and nothing enforced that the score was derived from the feed. Poison the feed, leave the score untouched, and the agent executes at full conviction on adversarial data. The decision layer was honest. The plumbing between evidence and belief was not.

Same shape here. A generation layer that receives an empty retrieval result alongside a populated template has no enforced relationship between the two. It can emit "the tokenomics show elevated unlock pressure" from a document that never mentioned a token. Nothing in the pipeline reverts.

The diagnostic's answer is boring and correct: enumerate what is missing, per dimension, and name the smallest input that would change the answer. P0 — project name, one-sentence claim. P1 — information points, source, timestamp. P2 — token status. Three of five and the machine runs.

That threshold is a quorum, not a checklist. It encodes a real judgment about which fields are load-bearing: you cannot price a narrative without knowing what the narrative claims, and you cannot trust a claim without knowing when it was made. A timestamp is not metadata in this industry. It is half the finding. I trace the path the compiler forgot, and the timestamp is usually where the trace terminates.

The industry's stated fear about AI in research is hallucination — the model inventing a partnership that never existed. That fear is misprioritized. Hallucinations are loud. They get caught, screenshotted, ratioed. They are the cheap failure.

The expensive failure is the correct refusal that gets discarded. This diagnostic will almost certainly be re-prompted, and the next pass will produce a nine-dimension analysis with confident numbers, because that is what the pipeline was built to emit. Nobody will archive the version that said zero. Yellow ink stains the white paper, and the page gets filed as clean.

There is a type-system analogue and it is not decorative. In JavaScript, null + 1 evaluates to 1; undefined + 1 evaluates to NaN. Both are wrong. Only one is loud. Most research infrastructure is typed like the first expression — absence coerces silently into a plausible number, and the plausibility is the attack surface.

Silence is the highest security layer, but only if the downstream consumer respects silence. Almost none do. Absence gets treated as zero rather than unknown, and unknown is the only honest value in the set.

The next wave of crypto research failures will not be fabricated facts. They will be well-formed documents about empty inputs, forwarded by people who never checked whether the basis field resolved.

Forecast: within a year, an institutional-grade diligence report will be invalidated not because its conclusion was wrong but because its input was never there — and the audit trail will show a parser that returned {} and a template that returned confidence.

The question worth asking of any research artifact is not "is this analysis good." It is "does this analysis revert when its input is missing." Most do not. The code whispers what the auditors ignore.
